This ornamental fountain was built next to the portal of Parque Infantil Monteiro Lobato in 1944, where sr. Porfírio used to sit and oversaw everything that went on. He was the man who held the key to the park. Children had a strict timetable to follow. One could not come and go at his own leisure...
We used to call it 'Navio' (ship) in the 1950s...it was built in the 1940s in order to be a local market but it never became anything but a few shops only. It was located at a triangle among Rua Goiás, Avenida República and Rua Sargento Ananias de Oliveira. It had its back to Parque Infantil Monteiro Lobato.
From left to right: Leda, Marilena, Haymar, Lucrécia, Rosalia, Maria José and Shirley. These young ladies worked at Parque Infantil Monteiro Lobato as teachers and managers of the children who congrated to the grounds of the park where there were social activities as listening to fairy tales & stories played from a record player before an audience in the dining room. They also organized dances, sporting activities to celebrate Saint John's on 24 June or Carnaval and Independence Day on 7th September. They also taught children how to play checkers, how to swim, football playing etc.
